Scots golfer Jack McDonald is set to make his Open Championship debut at Royal Birkdale, a significant step up for a player who has been balancing professional aspirations with his PGA Professional training. McDonald secured his spot in the prestigious tournament just weeks ago through final qualifying at Dundonald, leading to a necessary reshuffling of his schedule, which included withdrawing from a Tartan Tour event at Bothwell Castle.
McDonald, one of two Scots in the field alongside Bob MacIntyre, described the period since qualifying as a "whirlwind." He had planned a holiday to Rome, but found it difficult to fully disconnect, with the prospect of competing in The Open looming. "I’m not playing European or HotelPlanner Tour this year — and suddenly I’m going to be in the biggest event there is," McDonald stated. He emphasized his focus on controlling his own game and adopting a mindset of belonging among the world's top golfers, drawing parallels between climbing the ranks from amateur to the Challenge Tour and now reaching golf's highest level.
Previously, McDonald played in The Open at Royal Troon in 2024, where he missed the cut by a single stroke. He noted that while the circumstances feel different this time – with less familiarity with the Royal Birkdale course compared to being the local favorite at Troon – the core experience of The Open remains special. He had a prior, albeit distant, experience at Birkdale during Walker Cup week, but acknowledges the course has since been modified.
McDonald anticipates a stern test at Royal Birkdale, particularly with dry conditions and no rain forecast, which he expects will place a premium on accurate fairway play. He contrasted this with the exceptionally difficult conditions he experienced at Troon. "The firmer it gets, the more premium there will be on hitting fairways," he commented. Despite the challenges, McDonald expressed his intention to enjoy the experience, embracing whatever the outcome may be. "I’m just here to enjoy it. What will be will be. Yeah, it is going to be such a great week, no matter what."
