Israeli Footballer Sent Off for 'Gun Gesture' Celebration; Manager Defends Player

Israeli footballer Sayed Abu Farchi was ejected from a match for his goal celebration, in which he mimicked a gunshot. The incident occurred during his country's defeat to Austria, when Farchi removed the corner flag and made the gesture. He was already on a yellow card, and the referee issued a second, leading to his dismissal.

Fans and observers noted the gesture's insensitivity given the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine. Farchi protested the decision to Bulgarian official Georgi Kabakov at the time.

Israel's manager, Ran Ben-Shimon, defended the Colorado Rapids midfielder, stating that Farchi has performed the same celebration numerous times previously without penalty. "He didn't know about it, this is his way to celebrate every goal he scores," Ben-Shimon said. "He's a young player, I'm sure this lesson will stay with him a long time, he made a mistake."

However, UEFA rules stipulate that a player can be booked for "gesturing or acting in a provocative, derisory or inflammatory way." The act of removing the corner flag itself is also a bookable offense.

The Israeli national team has been involved in controversy this week, following comments made by Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson. Hallgrimsson used the word "genocide" in previewing upcoming matches between the two nations, drawing an angry response from the Israeli Football Association. The Israeli FA criticized Hallgrimsson on social media, calling his comments "ignorance and hypocrisy."

The matches between Israel and the Republic of Ireland are scheduled to be played at neutral venues.

Austria defeated Israel 3-1 in the match where Farchi was sent off. Romano Schmid, Philipp Mwene, and Sasa Kalajdzic scored for Austria.
