Ireland to Play Israel in Nations League Amidst Protests and Player Boycotts

Republic of Ireland head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson has confirmed that the team's second Nations League match against Israel will proceed as scheduled this Sunday, despite significant opposition and a goalkeeper's refusal to play on ethical grounds. A petition to halt the game garnered nearly 20,000 signatures, and hundreds of pubs in Ireland have vowed not to broadcast the fixture.

Hallgrimsson stated that the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) intends to fulfill both scheduled matches. "That was our intention when we came into the camp and it is still our intention," he said. "We are trying to focus on the football. It is already decided we will fulfil the games."

Goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu officially withdrew from selection for the Israel matches due to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, citing his belief that "the killing of innocent people is wrong." Bazunu, however, has remained with the squad for support and will be replaced by Josh Keeley for the second fixture against Israel. Hallgrimsson praised Bazunu's character and the team's solidarity, stating that "there's been a lot of lies said around all of this, but we welcome him back and he's taken part, amazing."

Ahead of the first match, Ireland captain Dara O'Shea did not shake hands with Israel's captain Manor Solomon at the coin toss. The Irish team also wore black armbands "in recognition of all lives lost in the [Gaza] conflict" and pointedly looked at the ground during the Israeli national anthem. Hallgrimsson had previously commented that his team is "playing against genocide."

The upcoming match will be played behind closed doors in Serbia. Hallgrimsson also commended Finn Azaz, a player with Israeli heritage, for his conduct and diplomacy within the Ireland camp during this period of heightened tension. "He's been one of the persons I admire the most in how he conducted himself in all of this," Hallgrimsson said.

Following the first match, which Ireland won 3-0, Israel's captain Solomon expressed his dismay, stating, "They said nonsense [to us] during the game... Of course they hate us and we don't like them." He added, "We are Israelis and love the country. And that will always be the case."

The situation unfolds against a backdrop of broader political actions by Ireland, including its official recognition of a Palestinian state in May 2024 and joining South Africa's case against Israel at the International Court of Justice. Ireland has also implemented travel bans on certain Israeli government ministers and has a history of boycotting goods from illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank.
