Iraola Urges Caution on Liverpool Prodigy Ngumoha
Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola acknowledges the excitement around 18-year-old Rio Ngumoha but warns against unrealistic expectations.
Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola has expressed his fortune in coaching rising star Rio Ngumoha, an 18-year-old who has recently garnered significant attention. However, Iraola has cautioned against placing excessive or unrealistic demands on the young player, emphasizing the need for a natural developmental process.
Ngumoha delivered a notable performance against Villarreal, contributing two goals with impressive runs, which has amplified the buzz surrounding him. Despite the growing hype, Iraola stated that Ngumoha appears unfazed by the public's reaction.
"Rio is very coachable," Iraola said. "He pays attention, he listens to every information we give. We haven't done anything super special with him. It's like let's give him confidence, continue the process and he is the one adding a lot to his game."
Iraola added that Ngumoha seems focused on improving his game and meeting the team's needs, rather than being overly influenced by external commentary. "I think he's very focused on the football side, of improving his performances, of trying to get the things that we need from him," Iraola commented. "It's not easy when you are 18 and everyone is talking about you, but he knows that what matters is what is happening today in training, the things that he can add to his game, and I think he's very focused there."
While acknowledging the positive aspects of Ngumoha's development, Iraola stressed the importance of managing expectations. "Definitely, I feel lucky to have him, but I think there is also a moment where we cannot also, just because he has played well, put the expectation straight away super high because it's not fair for him," he stated. "Because he will still make mistakes, he will have his moments up and down, and this is a natural process that every player goes through. So we cannot straight away put the demands in Rio that are impossible to beat."
Liverpool is preparing to face Brighton in a top-of-the-table clash on Sunday. The team will be without winger Victor Munoz and vice-captain Dominik Szoboszlai, though Bradley Barcola has rejoined training after missing recent sessions.
