Injuries Force Islanders' Kyle Palmieri Back Onto Fourth Line, But Return is Expected

Kyle Palmieri’s placement on the fourth line Saturday morning was an unusual sight, but it is expected to be a short-term situation for the New York Islanders. The team concluded their 4-1 victory over the Maple Leafs with only 10 forwards due to lower-body injuries sustained by Calum Ritchie and Matias Maccelli.

Both Ritchie and Maccelli will be evaluated in New York. If they are sidelined, Palmieri ranks high among the forwards the Islanders will need to rely on for increased offensive production. Simon Holmstrom and Anthony Duclair are also expected to fill larger roles.

Fortunately for the Islanders, Holmstrom and Duclair combined for three of the team’s four goals in Saturday’s win, a promising sign for their offensive capabilities. Coach Pete DeBoer emphasized the importance of contributions from all four lines, noting that consistent scoring is crucial for the team’s success.

“Even if those guys [Ritchie and Maccelli] are back, it’s still important,” DeBoer said. “I’ve said that since Day 1: We’re not winning unless we score a certain amount of goals. And to do that the way we’re gonna do it is gonna be through four lines of guys that can hop over the boards and on any given night chip in.

Tonight we got a big one from Duke that got us out front. That first goal changes the feel of the game. If you’re chasing it, it’s a different thing.”

The Islanders have built a reputation as a well-structured defensive team, providing a solid foundation. However, scoring has been a point of concern, and the recent injuries may exacerbate this challenge.

“It’s an opportunity for guys to step into bigger roles, move around the lineup,” Palmieri told The Post. “I think for us it’s really about coming together as a group and doing what we did tonight.”

In other team news, Ilya Sorokin’s win on Saturday marked his 158th career victory, moving him past Chico Resch for second place on the club’s all-time list, though he still trails Billy Smith’s record of 230 wins.

The Maple Leafs were also impacted by injuries, playing without John Tavares, who is week-to-week with a lower-body injury. Additionally, top draft pick Gavin McKenna addressed his recent benching, stating that coach Jim Hiller assured him it was not related to his performance.
