IndyCar Series to Race in Spain for First Time Since 2007

The NTT IndyCar Series has announced a 2027 race at Spain's Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, marking the series' first international event outside of North America since 2013. The addition to the schedule provides a homecoming race for five-time series champion Alex Palou, who hails from Spain.

The race is set to take place on July 18, 2027. All IndyCar races will continue to be broadcast on Fox in 2027 for the third consecutive year. This European stop signifies a significant expansion for the series, which last held a race abroad in 2007, prior to the merger that formed the current IndyCar Series.

The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, a venue familiar to Formula 1 and MotoGP, will host the IndyCar event. While the track has faced criticism in Formula 1 for limited overtaking opportunities due to its flowing nature and lack of heavy braking zones, IndyCars are known for their capacity for on-track passes, suggesting the potential for exciting racing.

This new international date comes at the cost of at least one North American venue. The Nashville Superspeedway, which hosted the Freedom 250 Grand Prix, will not be part of the 2027 schedule. The one-off event in Nashville was announced later in the schedule release, and its return is not currently planned despite its success.
