Indiana, UCLA Highlight Joel Klatt's Updated College Football Playoff Projections

Three undefeated teams remain in the college football landscape, and a new group of teams with two and three losses have entered the College Football Playoff conversation following Week 8. FOX Sports analyst Joel Klatt has released his updated 12-team CFP bracket.

Klatt projects Indiana as the No. 1 overall seed, noting their gritty road win over Michigan. In his scenario, Indiana's only loss would be to Ohio State, and they would have avenged that defeat in the conference championship game. This would position Indiana as the No. 1 team in the country for the second consecutive year.

Georgia is projected as the No. 2 overall seed, a selection Klatt attributes to the committee's potential favorability towards the SEC and the strength of schedule. In this projection, Georgia would have avenged their late-season loss to Ole Miss by defeating them in the SEC championship game.

Ohio State is slotted as the No. 3 seed. Klatt suggests their placement is interchangeable with Georgia, but he believes the committee would honor the SEC's strength of schedule. In this scenario, Ohio State would be 11-2 after potentially losing a close Big Ten championship game to Indiana.

Notre Dame secures the No. 4 seed, receiving the final bye. Klatt emphasizes the importance of this seed, noting its historical advantage in the playoff. Their inclusion is based on an 11-1 record, bolstered by a late-season win over Miami, who would be the No. 1 team in the country at the time of their matchup.

Miami is projected as the No. 5 seed. Klatt posits that their matchup with Notre Dame is critical, with the winner potentially securing the bye. In this scenario, Notre Dame wins, and Miami, at 12-1 as ACC champions, falls to the fifth spot.

Utah, as the Big 12 champions, is projected as the No. 6 seed with a 12-1 record, having avenged their regular season loss to BYU in the championship game.

Texas earns the No. 7 seed, a position Klatt believes could be higher if they win out. Their resume includes wins over Ohio State and Ole Miss. Despite potential inconsistencies, a strong finish could elevate their standing.

Ole Miss is projected as the No. 8 seed. Klatt explains their fall to this position despite being in the SEC championship game is due to a prior loss to Texas. The reasoning suggests that playing in the conference championship can sometimes negatively impact seeding, a point of contention among coaches regarding the playoff format.

UCLA, with only one loss and an 11-1 record, is projected as the No. 9 seed. Klatt acknowledges their resume is not the strongest, but their single loss and avoidance of top-tier opponents like Ohio State and Indiana in this projection lead to their inclusion.

BYU enters the playoff field as the No. 10 seed. Their inclusion is attributed to a win over Utah and a crucial victory against Notre Dame. Despite a loss to UCF in this scenario, their Big 12 runner-up status and significant wins secure their spot.

The final at-large spot, the No. 11 seed, goes to LSU. Klatt suggests four 9-3 SEC teams—LSU, Alabama, Kentucky, and Tennessee—were candidates. LSU's inclusion is based on November wins over Alabama and Tennessee, with their loss to Texas being somewhat mitigated by Texas's improved trajectory in this projection.

Oregon State rounds out the projected field at No. 12. Klatt envisions them beating Boise State twice to win the Pac-12 championship, earning them a playoff berth and a first-round matchup against Miami.
