Indiana Hoosiers narrowly defeat Northwestern Wildcats in Big Ten opener
The reigning national champions struggled against Northwestern, ultimately securing a 29-23 victory despite offensive miscues and a key injury.
The Indiana Hoosiers, defending national champions, faced a significant challenge in their Big Ten opener, narrowly escaping with a 29-23 win against the Northwestern Wildcats on Friday night.
Despite entering the game as three-touchdown favorites, the Hoosiers found themselves in a tightly contested match. A recurring issue for Indiana this season has been slow starts, and that trend continued into the conference opener. The team opened with a 15-play, 67-yard drive that consumed nearly half of the first quarter but stalled due to a defensive play by Northwestern. Indiana's defense later secured points with a safety following a fumbled snap by Northwestern quarterback Aidan Chiles.
The Hoosiers offense appeared disjointed at times and accumulated more penalties than usual. A significant blow came in the first half when running back Turbo Richard was hit late out of bounds and had to leave the game. Indiana managed to take a 12-0 lead into halftime, with Northwestern struggling offensively, managing only -5 rushing yards in the first thirty minutes.
Northwestern found their footing in the second half. Chiles led the Wildcats into the red zone and scored their first points of the game. Early in the fourth quarter, Chiles connected with Griffin Wilde for a touchdown. Northwestern's attempt to tie the game with a two-point conversion was thwarted by Indiana's defense.
Indiana responded with a scoring drive, bolstered by a 39-yard carry from Lee Beebe Jr., who shouldered more of the rushing load after Richard's injury. Beebe finished the game with 203 rushing yards.
Penalties continued to be a factor for Indiana, who had averaged only three penalties per game prior to this matchup. Costly penalties, including a holding call that gave Northwestern a short field, kept the Wildcats in contention. Despite facing pressure near their own goal line, Indiana extended their lead with a quarterback keeper by Josh Hoover.
Northwestern added a field goal on the ensuing drive, but Indiana recovered an onside kick attempt. The Hoosiers' slow start allowed Northwestern to remain competitive throughout the game.
Beyond the close score, the injury to Richard is a concern for the Hoosiers moving forward, though Beebe's performance provided a bright spot. Indiana's upcoming schedule includes games against Rutgers, Nebraska, and Ohio State.
