The Indiana Fever defeated the New York Liberty 106-92 on Tuesday night, propelling the team to the top of the Eastern Conference standings. Guards Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell led the offensive charge, with Mitchell scoring 28 points and Clark contributing 22 points and 10 assists.
Mitchell was particularly effective in the first half, scoring 20 of her points. She finished the game shooting 11-of-16 from the field, including four three-pointers. Clark also made four three-pointers, matching Mitchell and teammate Sophie Cunningham. Cunningham added 12 points, while Aliyah Boston contributed 19 points and seven rebounds for the Fever.
The Liberty's Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu each scored 19 points, and Jonquel Jones added 14 points and 10 rebounds. However, Indiana maintained control for most of the game.
Despite a third-quarter surge from the Liberty that cut the deficit to nine points, the Fever responded. Mitchell's three-point play and Cunningham's three-pointer late in the period helped Indiana rebuild a 20-point advantage.
Before the game, Indiana Fever coach Stephanie White addressed recent controversies, defending her team and pleading for a focus on the sport. "The hate, the fearmongering, the divisiveness that’s trying to hijack our league will not win. It won’t win," White stated. "We are united. We are connected. We will not be divided. Every day these women put their ass on the line. Every day when they go low, we go high. Love will win. Grace will win. Humility will win and kindness will win. I stand by them, I will always stand by them. Everybody else can go to hell."
Michele Tafoya, a commentator, has reportedly joined the program and praised Sophie Cunningham as a hero for her stance on women's sports amidst criticism from figures including Minnesota Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve and Seattle Storm leadership.
