Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White and two players were prevented from answering questions regarding comments made by teammate Sophie Cunningham about transgender athletes during a post-game press conference on Tuesday.

The team had just secured a 105-95 victory against the Seattle Storm, but the press conference was derailed when a reporter asked White about a pre-game protest and Cunningham's recent statements to ESPN. Cunningham had stated that keeping transgender athletes out of women's sports was "common sense," igniting widespread debate in the WNBA.

When the reporter posed questions to White, Monique Billings, and Kelsey Mitchell about Cunningham's views and potential locker room discussions, a Fever communications officer intervened. The officer read a prepared statement on behalf of the organization:

"Neither our organization nor Sophie had any knowledge of this demonstration and no contact with its organizers. Our only goal as a team, whether home or away, is to win basketball games and make Fever fans for life and we are united on this mission. Do you have any more basketball questions?"

Following the statement, the press conference shifted to focus solely on the game.

Sources noted that White appeared prepared to respond to the question, while Billings and Mitchell exhibited non-verbal cues of discomfort, avoiding eye contact with the reporter. Neither Cunningham nor her close teammate Caitlin Clark, who typically speaks to the media after games, were made available to reporters following the contest.

Cunningham later shared highlight clips from the game on Instagram but did not directly address the controversy. She had previously defended her stance on social media, stating, "I said what I said."

Meanwhile, Seattle Storm head coach Sonia Raman addressed the pre-game protest during her own press conference. She emphasized Seattle's commitment to creating a welcoming environment at Climate Pledge Arena and confirmed that the organization worked with arena security to ensure attendees felt safe and included.

In a separate gesture, Storm player Stefanie Dolson was seen wearing a t-shirt that read "trans rights are human rights" as she arrived for the game. The Storm's official social media accounts posted photographs of Dolson's shirt, which appeared to be a pointed response to Cunningham's comments.

A group of several dozen individuals gathered outside Climate Pledge Arena prior to the game to express support for Cunningham and advocate for statewide initiatives that would restrict transgender students' participation in girls' athletics. The Indiana Fever are scheduled to continue their West Coast road trip, with their next game on Friday against the Portland Fire.
