India-born bowler Jai Moondra described his international debut as a "dream come true" after playing a pivotal role in Ireland's historic 34-run victory over world champions India in their opening T20 match at Stormont. Despite missing six players due to injury, Ireland delivered a strong bowling performance to secure their first senior international win against the tourists in any competition. This victory adds to Ireland's list of notable wins, which includes triumphs over Pakistan and England in the 2007 and 2011 World Cups.
Moondra, who moved from India, took two wickets for 26 runs in his four overs. His memorable debut included dismissing Sanju Samson with his first delivery. "It was a big stage for me, for my family and my team members, they were all rooting for me so all I can do is keep calm and keep doing what I have been doing because it's kept me levelling up," Moondra stated, adding that he will "cherish" his debut for the "rest of my life." He expressed feeling a mix of excitement and the need to remain composed, saying, "Testing myself against India and getting a first-ball wicket, I was trying not to be overwhelmed because we still had nine wickets to go."
The match had also been anticipated for the potential debut of 15-year-old Indian batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who was set to become India's youngest international player. However, his surprise absence from the lineup became a minor footnote to Ireland's significant achievement. The event drew over 4,000 fans to Stormont, hoping to witness a moment of cricket history.
