Hyron Andrews' Cause of Death Confirmed as Torn Aorta

An autopsy report has confirmed that former Sale Sharks lock Hyron Andrews died from a tear in his aorta. The 31-year-old rugby player was found unresponsive in a locked shower cubicle at the Atalante-Relais Thalasso Hotel on Friday, prior to his club's Champions Cup game against La Rochelle.

Emergency services were called to the scene but were unable to save Andrews, who was pronounced dead at the hotel. The autopsy, conducted by French authorities, revealed that the cause of death was an aortic dissection, likely resulting from an aortic aneurysm. The report described it as a tear in the aorta leading to a significant accumulation of blood within the sac surrounding the heart, classifying it as a natural cause of death.

Andrews had recently returned to his native South Africa to join the Lions rugby club this summer, after spending time with English side Sale Sharks, where he made 45 appearances. His body remains in France, and the Lions Rugby Company stated that the family is beginning the process of repatriating his remains to South Africa. A timeline for this process has not yet been determined.

Clubs across Europe paid tribute to Andrews following his death. Alex Sanderson, Sale director of rugby, remembered Andrews as a "brilliant guy and team-mate," noting his skill on the field and his charismatic personality off it. Sanderson added that Andrews and his wife, Maiglin, had embraced Manchester and the club during their time in England, and highlighted his role as a loving husband and father.

Hyron Andrews was a former South Africa Under-20 international. Mark Alexander, president of the South African Rugby Union, expressed shock and sympathy for Andrews' family and the wider rugby community, emphasizing his respected status within the sport and the profound loss felt by all who knew him. The South African rugby family's thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Maiglin, and his extended family during this time of sorrow.
