Carolina Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon has ignited controversy among NHL fans by engraving the names of six family members alongside his own on the Stanley Cup. This decision has drawn criticism for potentially taking up coveted spots that could have been allocated to players, coaches, or front-office staff who were integral to the team's championship victory.

The NHL's Stanley Cup allows for a maximum of 55 names to be engraved. Dundon's wife, Veruschka, and their five children—Caden, Dax, Drew, Blake, and Tagan—are reportedly listed on the Cup, with their names appearing before those of many team officials. This has particularly incensed fans, as these family members do not hold specific roles within the Hurricanes organization.

While other NHL franchises have included family members on the Cup, these instances have typically involved individuals with official capacities within the team, such as part-owners or alternate governors. For example, the Detroit Red Wings had nine Ilitch family members on the Cup across multiple championship years, all of whom held ownership or vice-presidential titles. Last season, the Florida Panthers reportedly included five family members, all of whom held titles like alternate governors.

In contrast, the Hurricanes' inclusion of Dundon's family members reportedly does not align with this precedent of familial inclusion tied to official team roles. A spokesperson for the Hurricanes declined to comment on the matter when contacted by The Athletic.

The NHL's official website outlines eligibility requirements for engraving names on the trophy. Players must have appeared in at least 41 regular-season games or one Stanley Cup Final game to be eligible. Since 1994, a stipulation allows teams to petition the Commissioner for exceptions under extenuating circumstances. The selection of management staff names is determined by the team but requires approval from the Hockey Hall of Fame and the NHL. However, the Hockey Hall of Fame has stated it is not involved in the approval process, noting that Hockey Operations at the league office in Toronto signs off on the names.

The Hurricanes secured their Stanley Cup victory by defeating the Vegas Golden Knights in six games during the recent finals. Despite the team's success, the debate over the engraving choices continues to draw sharp criticism from fans on social media platforms.
