Amy Hunt captured her first senior international title by winning the 100-meter race at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, marking Great Britain's first gold medal of the event. This victory follows her world 200m silver medal from last year's Tokyo championships and a Commonwealth 100m silver just two weeks prior.
The 24-year-old athlete, who broke the 11-second barrier for the first time this season, demonstrated a strong finish, moving from fifth to first place in the latter half of the race. She crossed the finish line with a time of 11.00 seconds. Hunt has potential opportunities to add to her medal count in the 200m and both the women's and mixed 4x100m relay events later in the week.
Defending champion Dina Asher-Smith of Great Britain finished fifth with a time of 11.10 seconds. The silver medal went to Poland's Ewa Swoboda in 11.02 seconds, and Belgium's Delphine Nkansa took bronze in 11.06 seconds.
This gold medal was Great Britain's second medal of the opening day of the championships. Earlier, the British quartet secured a silver medal in the mixed 4x400m relay. The team, which included Yemi Mary John, Ben Jefferies, Charlotte Henrich, and Toby Harries, finished in 3 minutes 10.47 seconds, behind winners Norway, who clocked 3:09.62. Yemi Mary John held off the Netherlands' Myrte van der Schoot in the final stretch to secure the second-place finish.
