The Houston Rockets have extended their star player Amen Thompson with a five-year, $208 million contract, a move that has ignited debate among NBA fans. ESPN reported the lucrative deal, which includes a 10 percent trade kicker, was finalized on Thursday.

While some fans and analysts have praised the extension, pointing to Thompson's significant contributions last season, others have criticized the massive financial commitment. Detractors have highlighted concerns about his shooting ability, with one fan commenting, "208 and no jumper." Another stated, "Paying a guard that kind of money when he can’t even shoot is insane."

Conversely, supporters argue that Thompson's performance justifies the contract. The 23-year-old led the league in minutes played last season and achieved career highs in points (18.3), assists (5.3), and steals (1.5).

Supporters point to his impactful performances, particularly during the Lakers series, where he was noted for his scoring, significant playing time, and defensive contributions. Last season, Thompson was one of nine players to average at least 18 points, seven rebounds, and five assists, notably being the youngest among that elite group which also included Luka Doncic, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Jayson Tatum.

Thompson was the fourth overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. He is the twin brother of Ausar Thompson, who plays for the Detroit Pistons. The Rockets finished fifth in the Western Conference last season before being eliminated by the Los Angeles Lakers in the first round of the playoffs.
