High School Football Player, 16, Dies in South Carolina UTV Crash

A 16-year-old high school football player died at the scene of a utility terrain vehicle (UTV) crash in rural South Carolina on Sunday, sparking an outpouring of grief in the western part of the state.

Cruz Evatt Ellenburg, a sophomore wide receiver who also served as Pickens High's backup quarterback, has been identified as the victim of the fatal rollover crash. The Pickens County Sheriff's Office has opened an investigation into the incident, and the coroner is expected to conduct an autopsy.

According to a press release from the Pickens County Coroner's Office, Ellenburg's UTV is believed to have gone off the road onto private property before rolling over. He was described as unrestrained at the time of the crash.

The community has been mourning the loss through numerous social media posts. One classmate and friend, who was reportedly at the scene of the crash, shared a lengthy tribute on Instagram.

"This is so hard for me to speak about," the post began. "Because I believe [it's] so unfair only one of us gets to walk away from the accident. I'm not gonna say a lot because I'd rather say it to your face. You had one of the best personalities out, and I see why God chose you."

The friend continued, "From 6th grade all the way to your final moments, I'm glad I was here for it all. I'm grateful I got to call you my best friend. We were at our closest and it felt like we were just getting started, which makes saying goodbye that much harder. Words can't describe how much you mean to me, and I just wish I would've had the heart to tell you while you were here. Until we meet again. Love, your best friend."

It remains unclear if the other student involved in the crash sustained any injuries.

The school district has opted not to share specific details of the crash out of respect for Ellenburg's family and is providing support to students and staff to help them cope with their grief.

"Our hearts are with Cruz's family, friends, classmates, and the entire Pickens High School community during this very difficult time," read a statement from the district. "Counselors and additional district support personnel are available at Pickens High School beginning today for students and staff members who may need support. We encourage families to speak with their children and to reach out to the school if additional support is needed."

Ellenburg was coming off a notable performance for the school's junior varsity football team, where he scored three touchdowns and earned "player of the game" honors the previous week, according to multiple reports.

Pickens head coach James Reynolds described Ellenburg as a "bright light in our school, community and football program." He added, "He was a dedicated player, teammate and friend to many. Our team will miss his infectious smile, energy and talents, but his memory will be honored through the hard work we put in moving forward."

A fundraiser has been initiated to help provide meals for the Ellenburg family during their period of mourning.
