Hibernian secured a narrow 2-1 victory over Shkendija in the first leg of their UEFA Conference League third qualifying round tie at Easter Road. Despite dominating for significant periods, the Scottish side had to rely on a late goal to establish a slender advantage heading into the return fixture.

Hibs head coach David Gray acknowledged the performance was not ideal but emphasized the team's resilience in snatching a win. "The players showed character to get back in front again," Gray stated. "We didn’t play our best but found a way to win the game — we have to take confidence from that."

Owen Elding opened the scoring for Hibernian in the 73rd minute, converting a low pass with an audacious back heel. However, Shkendija responded quickly, with Marko Gjorgjievski equalizing just three minutes later after being set up by captain Arvin Zejnullai. The decisive goal came in the dying moments when Warren O’Hora tapped in after a header from a corner struck the post.

Earlier in the match, Hibernian had chances to take the lead. Jason Kerr had a header go close, and Martin Boyle's shot was deflected wide. Elding also fired a shot just wide of the post. Shkendija posed an occasional threat, with goalkeeper Rafa Sallinger making a smart save to deny Drilon Islami in the second half.

Gray made tactical substitutions in the second half, bringing on Callum Wright for his competitive debut and Ante Suto. Wright's introduction proved impactful, as he provided the assist for Elding's opening goal. The team continued to push for a third goal in the final seconds, with Kerr having an effort cleared off the line.

"Winning games of football is difficult," Gray added. "It’s half-time in the tie and the thing that gives me confidence is we can be a lot better than we were tonight."

The second leg of the tie is scheduled for next Thursday.
