Lucas Herbert of Australia and Sam Burns of the United States have both achieved a score of eight-under-par 62, matching the lowest single-round score ever recorded in a men's major championship. The record was set at Royal Birkdale during the second round of The Open.

Herbert came close to making history by breaking the record, needing only a par on the 18th hole to shoot a 61. However, the final hole proved challenging, statistically playing as the hardest on the course in the second round. Herbert's tee shot went wide right, near the out-of-bounds line, forcing him to take a penalty drop. After navigating the long fescue, he reached the green in three shots and missed his par putt, finishing with a bogey.

Despite the unfulfilling finish, Herbert's performance was described as splendid. He acknowledged being aware of his opportunity to make history, stating, "Nobody was telling me but I definitely knew." He added that he "did a great job of staying present and not thinking about the records" and focused on his own play.

Herbert, who competes on the LIV Golf circuit and won his first tournament in May, was seeking to become the first player to shoot a 61 in a major. The current record of 60 in a women's major was set by Haeran Ryu at the Evian Championship earlier this month.

Sam Burns, representing the United States, also posted an eight-under-par 62, sharing the major championship record.
