Heavyweight Boxing Faces Uncertain Future as Dubois Eyes Next Steps

The heavyweight boxing division is entering a new era, with Daniel Dubois positioning himself for significant unification fights after his dominant win over Fabio Wardley. The path forward, however, is complicated by mandatory challengers, potential rematches, and the ongoing politics of boxing.

Filip Hrgovic, the IBF champion, has expressed interest in a rematch with Dubois, having entered the ring after Dubois' victory. However, Hrgovic is obligated to face mandatory challenger Frank Sanchez. Promoter Frank Warren indicated plans to stage Hrgovic's first defense in Croatia early next year, which could postpone a Dubois-Hrgovic reunion.

Dubois' promoter, Frank Warren, stated that the focus is on securing unification fights for Dubois in the coming year. A lucrative opportunity for Dubois could also arise from a potential meeting with the winner of the upcoming showdown between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk.

Fabio Wardley, despite his defeat, has demonstrated the potential to compete at a world level. However, the loss highlighted technical deficiencies that he may need to address. A return against a lower-ranked opponent might be considered to rebuild confidence, but his ability to challenge the division's elite again remains a question.

Several other fighters are vying for prominence in the division. American Jarrell Miller remains highly ranked, while prospects Jared Anderson and Olympic silver medalist Richard Torrez Jr. are in developmental stages. Former world champion Joseph Parker is looking to return after his provisional doping suspension was lifted in August.

Internationally, Australia's Teremoana Teremoana has a perfect record with all 12 professional opponents stopped within two rounds. Uzbekistan's two-time Olympic champion Bakhodir Jalolov extended his unbeaten streak with a recent victory. In Britain, the veteran Derek Chisora, 42, is contemplating another comeback and reportedly expects to face WBA 'regular' champion Arseny Gassiev in December.

British champion Richard Riakporhe is aiming for world titles after moving up from cruiserweight. Former cruiserweight world champion Lawrence Okolie is also targeting a return to the ring. On the domestic scene, fighters like David Adeleye, Dave Allen, Johnny Fisher, and Frazer Clarke are active. Emerging talents include Leo Atang and Adam Olaniyan.

With Usyk and Fury potentially nearing the end of their careers, the heavyweight division is ripe for new stars to emerge. The challenge will be assembling the top champions for major bouts amidst mandatory obligations, rematch clauses, and the complexities of boxing promotions.
