Hearts' aspirations of advancing in the Europa Conference League are in jeopardy after a 2-2 draw with Rapid Vienna at Tynecastle in the play-off round first leg. The Scottish side twice came from behind, with a stunning strike from James Wilson putting them ahead in the second half, only for Rapid to equalize late on.
Rapid Vienna, who had won all eight of their competitive matches this season prior to the game, showcased their attacking threat early on. Goalkeeper Beau Reus was called into action multiple times in the opening stages, denying Matthias Seidl and Bendeguz Bolla. However, the Austrian Bundesliga leaders took the lead in the 30th minute when Serge-Philippe Raux-Yao headed home from close range after a corner. A VAR check confirmed the goal, despite a lengthy deliberation.
Despite the setback, Hearts rallied towards the end of the first half. Josh McPake forced a save from Rapid goalkeeper Niklas Hedl, and further long-range efforts from Claudio Braga and Tom Renaud tested the visiting keeper. The team's defensive struggles, having conceded 13 goals in previous European ties, were evident, with right-back Jordi Altena being identified as a potential weak link by the opposition.
Hearts emerged for the second half with renewed vigor and found an equalizer in the 56th minute. Pierre Landry Kabore provided a clever reverse pass to McPake, whose shot took a deflection off Raux-Yao and found the back of the net. Shortly after, Hearts took the lead through a sensational strike from James Wilson. Collecting the ball 30 yards from goal, Wilson spotted Hedl off his line and unleashed a magnificent shot into the top left corner.
However, Rapid Vienna fought back in the closing stages. Nikolaus Wurmbrand restored parity with a deflected shot, securing a draw for the visitors and leaving Hearts with a significant challenge in the second leg next Wednesday in Vienna. The result means Hearts must achieve a positive result away from home to avoid being eliminated from three European competitions early in the season, having already exited the Champions League and Europa League qualifying rounds.
