Hearts Draw Opening Conference League Match After Late Nordsjaelland Equalizer
Oisin McEntee scored the opener, but a deflected strike in the 86th minute denied Hearts a home victory against the Danish side.
Hearts began their Conference League league phase campaign with a 1-1 draw against Nordsjaelland, conceding a late equalizer that left manager Wouter Vrancken frustrated.
Oisin McEntee put the Scottish club ahead in the first half, capitalizing on an unexpected start after a last-minute injury to club record signing Eduardo Ageu. McEntee found the net in the 33rd minute following a corner that saw the ball ricochet into his path. He stretched to score past Nordsjaelland goalkeeper Andreas Hansen, sparking celebrations at Tynecastle.
Despite taking the lead, Hearts were often on the back foot. Nordsjaelland, known for their technical skill and counter-attacking threat, looked dangerous throughout the match. Ghanaian winger Prince Amoako posed a consistent problem for the Hearts defense in the opening stages. The Danish side also struck the post in the 23rd minute through Alexander Lind, who pounced on a misplaced pass.
Hearts had chances to extend their lead, particularly early in the second half when Calvin Miller set up Josh McPake, who dragged his shot wide. Later, defender Malachi Fagan-Walcott headed a free-kick from Miller just wide of the post.
Nordsjaelland, however, persistently pushed for an equalizer. Their pressure paid off in the 86th minute when substitute Nicklas Rojkjaer's shot took a fortunate deflection past Hearts goalkeeper Beau Reus, securing a point for the visitors. Reus, who was a hero in the playoff round penalty shootout, had made several key saves earlier in the match.
VAR was consulted for a penalty appeal for Hearts' James Wilson in the first half, but the on-field decision to wave away the claim stood. Several Hearts players, including Braga, Wilson, and Milne, received yellow cards.
Hearts will now prepare for their next matchday two fixture, an away trip to face Trabzonspor in Turkey. The inability to hold onto their home advantage against Nordsjaelland could prove significant in the group standings.
