Hearts and Rangers Share Spoils in Thrilling 2-2 Draw
Olwethu Makhanya's late equalizer rescues a point for Rangers at Tynecastle.
Hearts and Rangers played out a dramatic 2-2 draw at Tynecastle, with Olwethu Makhanya scoring a late equalizer to deny Hearts a victory on Derek McInnes's return to his former club. The result leaves Rangers with a sense of a missed opportunity in the title race, especially with Celtic also dropping points.
Midway through the second half, Hearts had taken a 2-1 lead through goals from Claudio Braga and Calvin Miller, and looked set to continue their strong home record against Rangers. Birthday boy Braga was instrumental in Hearts' comeback, scoring one and assisting another, as the home side overturned Kevin Kelsy's first-half opener for Rangers.
Hearts began the match with energy, pinning Rangers back. However, Rangers took the lead in the 16th minute when Kelsy slotted home after a midfield turnover. Despite some early pressure from Hearts and a number of injuries to key players, Rangers held their advantage into halftime. News filtered through at the break that Celtic were trailing in their match, amplifying the potential significance of a Rangers win.
Hearts came out strong in the second half. Three minutes after the restart, Claudio Braga equalized from close range after a headed pass back across goal. The momentum shifted, and Hearts took the lead when Braga's shot deflected into the path of Calvin Miller, who fired past the Rangers goalkeeper.
Hearts had a chance to extend their lead, with Braga orchestrating play, but could not convert. Just minutes before the end of the match, however, Rangers defender Makhanya rose at the back post to loop a header into the far corner, securing a point for his team.
Derek McInnes received a hostile reception upon his return to Tynecastle, where he had previously played a key role in making the stadium a fortress. Hearts had not lost at home in the league in 25 matches prior to this encounter. Hearts manager Wouter Vrancken has been dealing with an extensive injury list, with eight first-team regulars unavailable.
The match saw several bookings for both sides, including for Rangers' Nico Raskin and Hearts' Altena and Kerjota. The final attendance was 18,692.
