Harry Kane has been crowned the world's best footballer, becoming the first English player in a quarter-century to win the Ballon d'Or. The England captain received the top prize at a ceremony held at the London Palladium on Monday night, surpassing contenders Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappe.

Kane's phenomenal goalscoring record throughout the past season set him apart. He netted 73 goals in total, including 61 for Bayern Munich, a tally not seen in Europe's top five leagues since Cristiano Ronaldo scored 61 for Real Madrid in the 2014-15 season. His contributions for England added another 12 goals, bringing his total goal involvements, including assists, to 81.

His triumph marks the first time an English player has won the Ballon d'Or since Michael Owen in 2001. Previous winners since then include footballing legends such as Ronaldinho, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and Karim Benzema. Kane is also the first player from the Bundesliga to claim the award since Matthias Sammer in 1996.

Despite being the bookmakers' favorite, Kane acknowledged the pressure and anticipation surrounding the award. He stated that while he would prefer to know the result in advance to ease the stress for himself and his family, he respected the organizers' decision to maintain suspense. The striker aimed to enjoy the event regardless of the outcome.

Kane's successful season saw him win the double with Bayern Munich and help England secure a third-placed finish at the World Cup. He also equaled Peter Shilton's record of 125 caps for England during recent Nations League fixtures.

Organizers France Football had opted against revealing the winner in advance in recent years to build anticipation, a change implemented after previous leaks led to some players boycotting the ceremony. For Kane and his family, the night concluded with elation as he received recognition from his peers.
