Harry Kane Wins Ballon d'Or, Becomes First English Player in 25 Years to Receive Honor
Bayern Munich striker recognized as world's best player after stellar goal-scoring season.
Harry Kane has been awarded the Ballon d'Or, marking the first time an English player has received the prestigious honor in 25 years. The Bayern Munich striker was recognized as the world's best player, surpassing Kylian Mbappe and Lamine Yamal for the award. The ceremony, held at the London Palladium, saw Kane deliver an emotional acceptance speech.
Kane's remarkable goal-scoring form throughout the previous season set him apart. He netted 61 goals for Bayern Munich, a figure not reached by any other player in Europe's top five leagues during that season. His combined total of 73 goals, including 12 for England, placed him ahead of Mbappe (58 goals) and Yamal (25 goals).
"Work hard in silence. Let success be your noise," Kane posted on social media after accepting the award. He expressed gratitude to his family, teammates, coaches, and former club Tottenham Hotspur for their support throughout his career.
He specifically thanked his wife, Kate, calling her his "best friend" and "biggest supporter." Kane also became emotional when speaking about his parents, acknowledging their sacrifices and unwavering support. He mentioned his children, who were watching from home, as his primary motivation.
Kane's achievement makes him the first English winner of the Ballon d'Or since Michael Owen in 2001. He is also the first player from the Bundesliga to win the award since Matthias Sammer in 1996. The Football Association illuminated Wembley Stadium in his honor following the announcement.
England manager Thomas Tuchel congratulated Kane, stating, "Congratulations Harry on a deserved Ballon d'Or. I ran out of superlatives to describe your performances a long time ago, but I’m delighted to see that you have now been formally recognised by the football world." Tuchel added that becoming the first Englishman to win the award in 25 years makes it "extra special."
Kane was a strong favorite for the award. The organizers, France Football, had implemented a decision to withhold the winner's name in advance in recent years to build suspense, a change from previous years where leaks had reportedly led to some players boycotting the event.
Kane's previous club, Tottenham Hotspur, where he played from the age of 11, was also a subject of his thanks. He stated that his time there allowed him to live his dream and that the journey has led him to this significant moment. He concluded by expressing his love for all his fans worldwide, acknowledging the honor and privilege of playing football and giving back to the supporters.
