Harry Kane Equals Peter Shilton's England Appearance Record

Harry Kane will equal Peter Shilton's record tally of 125 England caps when he steps onto the field against the Czech Republic at Wembley. The England captain is already the country's record scorer with 89 goals and added to that milestone in the Nations League fixture.

Kane, 33, made his senior international debut in 2015 against Lithuania, scoring a header within 80 seconds of replacing Wayne Rooney. Since then, he has built a significant career with the Three Lions, reaching two European Championship finals and the semi-finals of the World Cup.

Peter Shilton acknowledged Kane's achievement in a video message, stating, "I would just like to congratulate you on equalling my caps record for England. And you will go on and beat it in November, I'm sure of that." Shilton added, "Maybe you will set a record that will never be beaten, because you are still going strong Harry, still playing well and scoring goals, and I know how much dedication and hard work you actually put into achieving this, especially as a striker."

Kane is the seventh highest-scoring male player in international football history, trailing Cristiano Ronaldo's 146 goals. His international career almost took a different path, as his father is Irish, and he visited Ireland regularly as a child.

He has far surpassed the previous top scorer, Wayne Rooney, whose 53-goal tally Kane overtook in 2023. Kane also holds the record for England's top scorer at World Cups, with 14 goals, surpassing Gary Lineker's 10.

Kane became the quickest player to reach 100 caps for England, achieving the milestone in nine years and 167 days, from March 27, 2015, to September 10, 2024. He has also earned a record 92 caps as England captain, a number that exceeds the total caps of many players. Furthermore, Kane leads in goal contributions at major tournaments, with 21 goals and four assists for a total of 25.

"I think it is always special walking out now and seeing the stadium with the excitement of what's to come," Kane said prior to the game. "I try and not take it for granted - it is a special night tonight but we have to focus on the job. I felt like I was waiting on the sideline for ages to come on for Wazza. It was just as I dreamt it - coming on and scoring and it was the start of something special."

He expressed his pride in representing England, stating, "I am extremely proud to represent and play for England. I have been lucky enough to do it a fair few times. We have been extremely close to a trophy for a while now. I think we are closer than we have ever been. The team is in a good place, I'm in a good place."
