Harry Kane Earns Ballon d'Or After Overcoming Career Doubts
The English striker, once loaned to lower-league clubs, is recognized as the world's best player.
Harry Kane has been awarded the Ballon d'Or, capping a remarkable career journey that saw him overcome initial doubts and loan spells in lower divisions to become recognized as the world's premier player.
At 33 years old, Kane's triumph at the London Palladium is a fitting culmination of an exemplary career marked by numerous records for England, Tottenham Hotspur, and Bayern Munich. He stands as England's all-time top goalscorer with 91 goals and shares the record for most caps with 125 appearances. For Tottenham, he is the record scorer with 280 goals in 435 games. In the 2025-26 season alone, he achieved an impressive 73 goals in 65 matches for Bayern Munich and England.
Kane secured the sport's highest individual honor, surpassing Real Madrid and France striker Kylian Mbappe and Spain's teenage Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. His understated demeanor has led to him being described as an 'anti-superstar,' a quality that has drawn widespread commendation.
His path to global recognition was not always linear. Kane began his professional career with loan spells at Leyton Orient, Millwall, Norwich City, and Leicester City before developing into a top-tier player for both club and country. He recalled sitting on the bench for Leicester City during a dramatic Championship playoff loss in May 2013, a period that fostered significant self-doubt.
"That was probably the time in my career where it was the hardest – I was 19 and I was thinking, 'If I can't play for Norwich or for Leicester, even in the Championship, then how am I going to get back and play for Tottenham?'" Kane admitted.
Despite these challenges, Kane's return to Tottenham and subsequent move to Bayern Munich in August 2023 solidified his status as one of the greatest players. Although his time at Spurs was marked by a lack of trophies, his consistent performance and professional approach were always evident. His move to Bayern saw him win the Bundesliga twice, propelling him to a global platform that ultimately led to the Ballon d'Or.
Former England midfielder Danny Murphy lauded Kane as a "born goalscorer" and a "super professional" whose career longevity has been a testament to his dedication. While success with England, including losses in two Euro finals and two World Cup semi-finals, remains a notable omission, Kane continues to represent his country with distinction.
Alan Shearer, a predecessor in England's number nine shirt, praised Kane's journey, stating, "It was so well deserved because he hasn't had things all his own way. He's had to go round it the hard way. He had to start off the hard way by someone telling him, 'You're not quite good enough, you're going to have to work a lot harder to get to where you want to'." Shearer also highlighted Kane's humility, contrasting it with the often-extravagant lifestyles of modern footballers.
Kane is currently at the pinnacle of his powers, recognized not only for his goal-scoring prowess but also for his complete game, which includes his ability to drop deep and provide defense-splitting passes. As the celebrations subside, Kane will return to focus on upcoming fixtures for Bayern Munich, including a German DFB Pokal match and a significant Bundesliga clash against Borussia Dortmund.
