Harry Brook Smashes England's First ODI Double Century

Captain Harry Brook etched his name in the record books by becoming the first England batter to achieve a double century in a One-Day International, scoring a remarkable 202 against Sri Lanka in Rawalpindi. This monumental innings propelled England to a commanding total of 429-4, the highest ever recorded in an ODI held in Pakistan.

Brook's fiery knock surpassed Ben Stokes' previous England best of 182, set against New Zealand in 2023. More significantly, Brook's double century came off just 114 deliveries, breaking the record for the fastest double hundred in ODI history, previously held by India's Shubman Gill who reached the milestone in 117 balls last month.

Finishing on 202, Brook was dismissed on the final ball of the innings. His innings marks the 14th double hundred in men's ODIs and stands as the 12th highest individual score in the format. The captain's aggressive approach followed England's opening loss in the tri-series, demonstrating the positivity he had called for from his team.

Brook's strokeplay was a blend of innovation and power, with 10 sixes and 21 fours during his 116-ball stay. He reached his half-century in 42 balls and completed his fourth ODI century in 75 balls. The acceleration after reaching three figures was particularly stunning, as he surged from 100 to 200 in a mere 39 balls.

Earlier, opener Tom Banton contributed 50, while his partner Ben Duckett scored 29. Brook then forged a crucial 159-run partnership for the third wicket with Joe Root, who made 69 before being caught. England then promoted Will Jacks, who added an unbroken 185 runs from just 79 balls with Brook. Jacks himself reached a rapid half-century off 25 deliveries, finishing on 66 not out.

England amassed 156 runs in the final 10 overs. Brook broke Stokes' record with a six over the leg side off a full toss from Dilshan Madushanka. He was later dropped on 185. He reached his double century with a paddled-sweep, while Jacks had already begun celebrating. Brook was eventually caught at third man on the final ball of the innings.

This innings also represents the highest ODI score by a batter who did not open the innings and the fourth-highest by a captain. It further solidifies Brook's reputation as one of the world's leading multi-format batters, continuing his exceptional record in Pakistan, where he averages over 80 in six Test matches with four centuries, including a triple century in Multan.

As captain, Brook averages 56.04 in ODIs, a significant increase from his average of 25.2 when not leading the side. A similar trend is observed in T20 cricket, where he averages 47.57 as captain compared to 28.5 when not. Brook is only the second player, after West Indies legend Chris Gayle, to have registered a century in T20 Internationals, a double century in ODIs, and a triple century in Tests.
