Harry Brook's explosive century draws comparisons to Kevin Pietersen

Harry Brook struck a blistering unbeaten century and drew comparisons to former England star Kevin Pietersen as England decisively defeated Sri Lanka by 119 runs in the first T20 international in Southampton.

Brook, who has endured a summer without a Test hundred, scored 114 not out from just 49 balls, propelling England to a formidable total of 254-4 in their 20 overs. His innings included 10 fours and six sixes, showcasing a powerful and aggressive style that has led to comparisons with Pietersen, who is now part of England's backroom staff as a mentor.

Ben Stokes, Brook's former captain and teammate, lauded the young batsman's talent, stating that even Pietersen's genius could not match Brook's ability. "You are an absolute freak, Harry," Stokes remarked.

Brook himself acknowledged his admiration for Pietersen's approach to batting. "I used to love watching him bat when I was younger," Brook said. "He always looked to take the attack to bowlers and put them under pressure. In that aspect, I'm quite similar."

Both players are noted for their ability to read the length of deliveries, enabling them to effectively attack both pace and spin bowling. Brook demonstrated this skill throughout his 128-run partnership with Jos Buttler, who contributed a rapid 80 from 44 balls.

While Pietersen was known for innovations like the switch hit, Brook's signature shot is a tumbling scoop over fine leg. Both batters, however, have stirred strong opinions among fans due to their aggressive styles. Stokes defended such players, questioning why they are not simply admired for their abilities.

At 27, Brook's statistics at this stage of his career are comparable to Pietersen's. Brook's Test average is 53.08, slightly higher than Pietersen's 49.55 after 104 Tests. In T20 internationals, Brook already has two centuries, one more than Pietersen achieved.

However, Pietersen holds the edge in iconic match-winning performances, including his pivotal Ashes-winning century in 2005 and a remarkable 158 against Australia in Adelaide. Brook's most notable Test innings to date is 317 against Pakistan.

Since being promoted to number three in England's T20 side, Brook has averaged 95.20 with a strike rate of 200.84, scoring 288 runs without being dismissed. Former England bowler Steven Finn suggested that Brook could be considered the best all-format batter in the world, alongside players like Travis Head and Shubman Gill.

Brook also boasts a strong record as captain, having won 18 of his last 20 T20 matches as skipper, a notable contrast to Pietersen's brief five-month tenure as England captain.

In the match itself, Sri Lanka's chase was never a threat. England's bowlers were ruthless, dismissing the visitors for 135. Young seamer Sonny Baker took a career-best 3-12 in four overs. "I thought the performance tonight was near perfect," Brook commented after the game.
