Harriet Dart Captures First WTA Title at Guangzhou Open
British player Harriet Dart defeated Austrian teenager Lilli Tagger in a hard-fought three-set final to win her maiden WTA Tour singles championship.
Britain's Harriet Dart secured the first WTA Tour singles title of her career on Sunday, overcoming Austrian teenager Lilli Tagger 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in a tense final at the Guangzhou Open.
Dart, ranked 115th in the world, showed remarkable resilience throughout the match. The British number five twice saw leads in the deciding set erased by the 18-year-old Tagger, who is ranked 53rd. However, Dart broke Tagger's serve for a third time to take a 4-3 lead and then held her own serve to move within one game of victory.
After missing two championship points on Tagger's serve, Dart ultimately sealed the win on her third opportunity with a service winner. The emotional victory marked the biggest of her career, leading her to fall to the court in celebration.
The triumph capped a significant week for Dart, who progressed through qualifying to reach her first tour-level final. This performance is expected to see her climb back inside the world's top 100 and gain direct entry into the main draw of the Australian Open in January.
Resilience has been a hallmark of Dart's success in Guangzhou. This victory was the fourth time in seven matches that she had come back to win after losing the first set.
Working with former Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli has been cited as a key factor in Dart's resurgence. Since Wimbledon, Dart has won 19 of her 24 tour-level matches on hard courts, boasting an overall WTA Tour record of 23 wins from 34 matches this season—the highest winning percentage of her career. She reached a career-high ranking of 70th in 2024 after reaching the third round at Wimbledon and the second round at the US Open, but had been ranked outside the top 100 for much of the past two seasons.
Tagger acknowledged Dart's strong performance, stating, "It wasn't fun to be on the other side of the court today - you've had an amazing year."
