Harbaugh Expresses Confidence in McDaniel Amidst Chargers' Winless Streak

Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh stated on Wednesday that he remains "very confident" in offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel, despite the team's winless 0-6 start to the season. This confidence persists even as the Chargers' offense has struggled, leading to calls for a change in play-caller.

"We're very confident in Mike and his talent, his work ethic and his ability," Harbaugh said, according to The Athletic. "We continue to be."

The Chargers' decision to stay the course with McDaniel was informed by a self-evaluation during the team's recent bye week. The team is currently the only winless squad in the NFL, with every other team having secured at least one victory.

Their offensive performance has been particularly concerning, averaging a league-worst 15 points per game. This statistic was further impacted by a Week 6 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, where the Chargers managed to score only six points. This marked the end of Week 6 for the team before their bye.

McDaniel, who previously spent four seasons as the Miami Dolphins' head coach, was hired by Harbaugh. He is widely recognized as one of the league's adept offensive minds. McDaniel has worked closely with Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert, whom he described as one of the most talented players he has seen at the position. McDaniel expressed a desire to help Herbert "own" his role.

During the offseason, McDaniel's influence was visible as Herbert adjusted his shotgun stance and practiced with a green water ball instead of throwing to refine his footwork and simulate throws. Despite these efforts, Herbert's eight interceptions are tied for the league lead.

McDaniel was the architect of the Dolphins' high-scoring 2023 offense, which set a record with 70 points and amassed over 700 yards in a victory against the Denver Broncos.
