Hampshire Cricket has reversed its decision to sign New Zealand all-rounder Scott Kuggeleijn, stating the club has "listened to feedback from staff and supporters." Kuggeleijn will not represent the club in their remaining four County Championship fixtures.
The county announced on Tuesday that Kuggeleijn had been named in the squad for a match against Warwickshire. However, the signing was not announced on the club's social media channels. The decision to bring Kuggeleijn to the club faced criticism on social media.
Less than an hour before the start of play on Wednesday, Hampshire confirmed that Kuggeleijn would play no part in the final games of the season. The club issued a statement emphasizing their value for fan feedback. "We value the passion of our fanbase and thank everyone who took the time to share their views," Hampshire Cricket said. "Our focus now turns to supporting the team through the final four County Championship fixtures of the season. We encourage everyone to unite behind the team as we enter a crucial stage of the campaign."
Kuggeleijn, 34, was previously acquitted of a rape charge in 2017 following a re-trial. He has played 12 years for Northern Districts in New Zealand and has represented his country in three Test matches, two one-day internationals, and 18 T20s.
Hampshire is currently at the bottom of Division One in the County Championship standings, with 86 points. They are 16 points behind Leicestershire, the team immediately above them. This season, Hampshire has secured only two red-ball victories, with five losses and three draws.
