Gus Johnson Draws Fan Criticism for Botched Calls in Ohio State-Indiana Game
The veteran Fox college football announcer made multiple incorrect calls during a pivotal matchup, sparking backlash on social media.
Fox's lead college football announcer, Gus Johnson, faced criticism from viewers following several miscalls during the Ohio State versus Indiana game on Saturday. Johnson, who calls games alongside analyst Joel Klatt, was covering the contest between the fifth and sixth-ranked teams in the nation.
The announcer's notable errors occurred during critical moments in the second half. In the third quarter, Indiana kicker Nico Radicic attempted a 55-yard field goal while his team trailed 13-7. As the ball traveled toward the goalposts, Johnson declared it good, only for the kick to fall short. He subsequently corrected himself, noting it was the second missed field goal of the day for the Hoosiers.
A clip of this miscue was initially shared by an official Fox account on X but was later removed amid fan complaints, as reported by Awful Announcing.
The most significant error came late in the fourth quarter with Indiana trailing 19-15 and less than two minutes remaining. During a crucial offensive drive, Indiana receiver Nick Marsh appeared to catch a pass in the end zone. Johnson immediately announced it as a touchdown. However, replays showed Marsh's left foot had stepped out of bounds before securing the catch, and officials did not signal a touchdown. Johnson had to correct his call again after the replay confirmed the receiver was out of bounds. Marsh was seen with his hands on his head on screen as the incorrect touchdown call was made.
Social media reactions reflected a mixed response. Some fans expressed strong disappointment with Johnson's performance, with one user on X commenting, "Truly awful announcing that game. Hard game to watch, and an even harder game to hear." Another user remarked, "Gus Johnson has had the saddest example of falling off a cliff. Shell of his former self." Others defended the announcer, suggesting the broadcast angle made it difficult to see the receiver's feet clearly.
Gus Johnson has been a prominent figure in college football broadcasting for Fox for many years. The game itself was a closely contested matchup, with Ohio State ultimately securing a narrow victory.
