Guardians Take Series Lead Over Rays After Game 3 Pitching Dominance and Halpin's Homer

The Cleveland Guardians secured a 3-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 3 of their series on Thursday, taking a 2-1 series lead. The game, moved up to a 1 p.m. ET start due to weather concerns, saw the Rays' offense struggle, managing only two runs on three hits.

Guardians starter Gavin Williams delivered a strong performance, pitching five innings and allowing two runs on two hits while striking out nine. Despite his effectiveness, manager Stephen Vogt opted to bring in Daniel Espino from the bullpen after Williams' 70th pitch. The Guardians' relief pitchers continued the shutdown effort, with Espino, Erik Sabrowski, Hunter Gaddis, and closer Cade Smith combining to retire 16 of the last 17 batters faced.

The game's pivotal moment came in the fifth inning when Petey Halpin hit a two-run home run off Rays pitcher Griffin Jax, giving the Guardians a 3-2 lead. Halpin's blast traveled 385 feet and was followed by an exuberant bat flip. "I kind of blacked out," Halpin said after the game, acknowledging his celebration might have been excessive.

Cleveland opened the scoring in the second inning when Jo Adell walked and was driven in by a Nathaniel Lowe single. The Rays briefly took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning after Yandy Díaz doubled and scored on Chandler Simpson's two-run triple. However, Halpin's home run in the fifth inning erased the deficit and ultimately proved to be the game-winner.

Jax pitched four-plus innings for the Rays, surrendering three runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts. The Rays' offense was largely ineffective, with seven of their nine innings ending with batters being retired in order.

Game 4 is scheduled for Friday, but forecasts of inclement weather could impact the start time. The Guardians will aim to close out the series, while the Rays will look to force a decisive Game 5.
