Mary Budenholzer was previously married to Mike Budenholzer, a former top assistant to Popovich and later head coach for the Phoenix Suns and Milwaukee Bucks. Mike and Mary Budenholzer were married for two decades and raised four children together during his tenure as Popovich's assistant. Mike Budenholzer served on Popovich's staff in San Antonio for 17 seasons, from 1996 to 2013, during which time he was instrumental in the Spurs winning four NBA championships.
Mike and Mary Budenholzer divorced in 2016. Popovich's first wife, Erin, passed away in 2018 after a long illness. She had been married to Popovich for 42 years.
Popovich stepped away from coaching the San Antonio Spurs in November 2024, following a mild stroke that occurred at the arena before a home game.
