Green Bay Packers Lauded for Classy Tribute to Chicago Bears Legend Mike Ditka

The Green Bay Packers received widespread acclaim for their respectful tribute to legendary Chicago Bears head coach Mike Ditka prior to their Sunday matchup. The gesture occurred just two days after Ditka, a revered figure in NFL history, passed away at the age of 86.

Despite the historic and often intense rivalry between the Packers and the Bears, Green Bay chose to honor their former opponent before the Week 5 game at Lambeau Field. The tribute included a moment of silence observed by attendees and a visual commemoration displayed on the stadium's video boards. The tribute was also featured during Fox's broadcast of the game.

Fans and media outlets quickly took to social media to commend the Packers for their sportsmanship. "[The] Packers are all class for doing this for the #Bears and Mike Ditka," read one post on X, formerly Twitter. Another user commented, "ok that's actually classy from green bay," while a third added, "Mad respect to Green Bay for doing this."

The Packers also issued a statement shortly after the news of Ditka's death. "One of the fiercest competitors in NFL history, Mike helped define the intensity and tradition of the Packers-Bears rivalry, the oldest in professional football," the statement read. "He embodied the toughness and passion that have made the rivalry one of the most storied in all of sports. While he was a formidable opponent, his contributions to the game and to a rivalry that has meant so much to both franchises will always be respected and remembered by the Green Bay Packers."

Ditka's legacy extends beyond his coaching career. He was a standout tight end, playing on the Bears' 1963 NFL championship team and later winning a Super Bowl with the Dallas Cowboys in 1971. He is perhaps most celebrated for coaching the Bears to their only Super Bowl title in 1985, leading the team through its most successful era.

According to The Chicago Sun Times, Ditka passed away on Friday surrounded by family and friends. A cause of death has not been publicly announced. Ditka's influence also permeated sports culture, leading to a broadcasting career with ESPN following his coaching tenure.
