West Indies all-rounder Justin Greaves achieved a career-defining moment on day three of the first Test against Pakistan at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad, taking his maiden Test five-wicket haul.
Greaves' extraordinary spell saw him claim five wickets for no runs, dismantling Pakistan's batting order. This remarkable performance came after he had bowled six overs earlier in the day for 27 runs without success. "When I came on captain Roston Chase just said 'continue to be disciplined in what you are doing' and to see if I can get some wickets for the team," Greaves stated. "The ball nipped around and I got some reward. Anytime I get the ball in hand the team looks to me to be that solid player for them [and] try to dig us out of situations."
The 32-year-old Barbadian's sequence of five consecutive wicket maidens helped dismiss Pakistan for 282 in their first innings, trailing the West Indies' total of 311 by 29 runs. His spell was crucial in Pakistan losing their last seven wickets for just 38 runs.
Pakistan captain Shan Masood was Greaves' first victim, bowled for 109 after a deceptive delivery. Greaves then removed Aamer Jamal, trapped Ali Usman lbw, and had both Mohammed Rizwan and Mohammad Abbas caught behind.
At the close of play on day three, the West Indies were 126-7 in their second innings, extending their lead to 155 runs. The match remains in a finely balanced position heading into day four.
