Great Britain Faces Uphill Battle Against Czech Republic in Billie Jean King Cup

Great Britain's Billie Jean King Cup squad is preparing to face a challenging quarter-final tie against the Czech Republic on Tuesday in Shenzhen, China. The British team, comprising Harriet Dart, Katie Boulter, Sonay Kartal, Mika Stojsavljevic, and Jodie Burrage, acknowledges they are the underdogs against an 11-time champion nation with a roster featuring two top-10 players.

The Czech Republic boasts Linda Noskova and Karolina Muchova, who met in the Wimbledon final, alongside Marie Bouzkova, a two-time WTA title winner this year, and breakthrough talent Sara Bejlek. The Czech team's singles players are all ranked higher than their British counterparts. In doubles, the formidable pairing of Bouzkova and Noskova, who won a title in Cincinnati, may be joined by Katerina Siniakova, the current world No. 1 in doubles with 12 Grand Slam titles.

Katie Boulter, ranked world No. 54, stated that while her team is the underdog, the pressure is on the Czechs. "We are the ones that are going to have to make something happen, something special," Boulter told BBC Sport. "But that being said, a lot of pressure is on them, and we've seen in this tournament before that people can make upsets, and I think that's what we'll be looking to do. I think we have no pressure ourselves, and we're just going to go out there with no expectations."

Boulter has had a mixed record against Czech players. She lost to Muchova in Miami and more decisively at the US Open earlier this month, but she did defeat Noskova in Osaka in October 2025, though she lost to her in Cincinnati in August. "They are both incredible players, both extremely good at what they do," Boulter said. "Their base level is so high, you can't play the same way that you would normally play if you were to play someone ranked a lot lower. I think you have to give them respect, but also play the ball that's coming at you at the same time. That's my challenge, to focus on the ball coming at me and try and impose my own game."

Harriet Dart echoed the sentiment of facing a tough matchup on paper but expressed confidence in her team. "I think even though the match-up on paper here is pretty rough for us, at the same time I know how well this team can play," Dart said. "We have strong belief within ourselves and within our own team that we can do well in this competition."
