Scottish golfer Grant Forrest achieved a career milestone by winning the Open de Espana in Madrid with a dramatic birdie on the final hole, securing a one-shot victory and a place in next year's Masters.

Forrest, 33, sank a four-foot putt on the 18th at the Real Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, finishing with a final-round 70 to reach 14 under par. This triumph denied Spain's Eugenio Chacarra and France's Victor Perez, who were chasing a playoff.

Sharing the lead with England's Joe Dean heading into the final round, Forrest secured his third DP World Tour title and, crucially, invitations to both the Masters and The Open. "I'm in shock, honestly, pure shock just now," Forrest stated after his first overseas win. "It's been such a tough year. I've just not played well at all."

He added, "It's fairytale stuff, I've played two Opens and to be going to Augusta, I just can't get my head round it. You can have a great career in this game and never get to go to Augusta, so I cannot believe it."

Forrest had been level with Chacarra and Perez on 13 under as he approached the final hole, but he held his nerve to record his fifth birdie of the day, overcoming a round that also included four bogeys.

"I was texting my wife about an hour before I teed off, saying ‘I haven’t been this nervous for a long time’," Forrest admitted. "It’s a good thing and I just tried to embrace it and I’m just really proud of the way we dug in there today."

Chacarra had moved into a share of the lead early in the final round with three consecutive birdies and added an eagle at the seventh and a birdie at the eighth, before also birdying the last to finish at 13 under. Perez, who started the day one shot off the lead, made back-to-back birdies at the 16th and 17th to join a four-way tie for the lead, but parred the final two holes.

Denmark's Jacob Skov Olesen was also in contention at 13 under heading into the final hole but a bogey dropped him to outright fourth. Dean, who had birdied the 15th to move to 13 under, faltered with bogeys on the 16th and 17th, finishing tied for fifth alongside Daniel Brown. Brown shot a bogey-free 64, including birdies on his final five holes, to climb the leaderboard.
