Gotham FC is set to play in front of a sold-out crowd of over 40,000 fans at Citi Field on Wednesday night, a landmark event for the club and women's sports.
This match, dubbed the Queens Classic, against the Washington Spirit is being hailed by club officials as a historic moment. "I think it’s a day that is definitely writing history for women’s soccer and women’s sport," said Gotham FC head coach Juan Carlos Amorós.
Mandy Freeman, a decade-long veteran with the club, reflected on the franchise's growth, contrasting the current large-scale event with past games played before significantly smaller audiences at Rutgers' Yurcak Field. "It hasn’t always been easy over the years, but being able to stick it out and stick it through is for these moments," Freeman stated. She added, "I think it’s just amazing to kind of be able to witness the rise from Sky Blue to Gotham and be a part of that journey. And I think it’s well deserved."
The club recently announced plans for its first dedicated training facility, further underscoring its development. The arrival of Australian star Sam Kerr, expected to make her second debut for the club at Citi Field, adds to the excitement.
The move to Citi Field is part of a larger expansion plan, with Gotham FC scheduled to permanently relocate to New York City FC's Etihad Park in 2028. Amorós encouraged his players to display a "brave" and "creative" style of play to attract and engage new fans. "We try to play that style of football that really makes the fans have fun, and that’s what we’re trying to do tomorrow," he said. "Make sure that everyone that comes to Citi Field, they fall in love with the team and that they’re looking forward to check when we play again."
The match will feature several of the league's top players, including Kerr, Washington's Trinity Rodman, and New York's Rose Lavelle. Gotham FC, currently fourth in the league standings, faces second-place rivals Washington Spirit. "We want to be breaking records every single time we play in New York," Freeman said, emphasizing the potential fan base.
In related team news, Gotham FC announced the signing of Irish midfielder Denise O’Sullivan from Liverpool. The transfer is an initial one-year loan with an obligation to buy. Amorós praised O'Sullivan's abilities, stating, "I think Denise is … probably one of the best midfielders on the planet. The way she sees, understands, reads the game — I think it’s something that can bring a lot for the team and for our fans."
