Gomez Scores Stunning Halfway-Line Goal as Brighton Thump Crystal Palace

Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Diego Gomez scored a remarkable goal from the halfway line during the team's dominant 5-0 victory over Crystal Palace on Sunday. The strike, which saw the ball fly over Palace goalkeeper Walter Benitez, has been hailed as a contender for goal of the season.

Gomez's goal, struck from 51 meters, is the furthest Premier League goal scored since November 2017. Lewis Dunk, Brighton's captain, previously won the Premier League goal of the month for September with a 35-yard strike against Coventry City. "As soon as he struck it, I knew it was in. He's taken the club goal of the season off me," Dunk joked after Gomez's effort.

Former Premier League striker Efan Ekoku described Gomez's goal as "superbly struck and right over the head of the keeper from the centre-circle." Ex-Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given compared the goal to David Beckham's famous strike for Manchester United against Wimbledon in 1996, noting that the goalkeeper's positioning was understandable given the team's defensive strategy.

"I don't even blame Benitez the goalkeeper," Given said. "We're always talking about sweeper goalkeepers and you've got to be high up for the through ball and the defence playing a high line. I think his position was fine. You've just got to take your hat off to Gomez. That is just a brilliant, brilliant goal."

The emphatic win against Crystal Palace contributed to Brighton's strong start to the Premier League season. The team currently has 16 points from seven matches, placing them third in the league table and ahead of several traditionally stronger clubs. Their tally of 23 goals is the highest in the league, surpassing Manchester City by four goals. This scoring rate is statistically significant, with only three teams in Premier League history scoring more goals in their first seven games of a season.

Brighton's offensive prowess extends beyond a few key players, with 10 different goalscorers this season. The team has secured convincing victories, including a 4-0 win against Aston Villa, a 5-0 win over Coventry City, a 3-0 defeat of Arsenal, and a 2-0 win at Sunderland, even after having a player sent off. They also achieved a 3-2 comeback victory against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup and have performed well in European competition.

Despite the impressive performances and spectacular goals, manager Fabian Hurzeler urged his players to remain focused on continuous improvement. "It's not simple to score a goal like this," Hurzeler stated. "Everyone speaks about his goal, but to me the most important thing is the things we can improve, small easy passes we missed. It's good to celebrate the win but understand there is still space for improvement especially for individual players."

Brighton faces a challenging run of away fixtures in the coming weeks, including matches against Liverpool and Manchester City, as well as European ties. The team will return to the Amex Stadium on November 8 to play Brentford, by which time their season prospects may become clearer. Analysts like Shay Given acknowledge Brighton's strong start, drawing parallels to Leicester City's 2016 title win and Blackburn Rovers' 1995 success, but caution that the long winter season and European competition could take their toll.
