Golf analysts Nick Faldo and Brandel Chamblee have voiced criticism regarding Bryson DeChambeau's current competitive focus, particularly as he approaches the British Open. The commentary emerged following DeChambeau's recent performance and his expressed interests beyond traditional professional golf.
Chamblee, speaking on the Golf Channel's "Live From The Open" broadcast, suggested that DeChambeau's priorities may have shifted. "It’s almost like he went from chasing Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy to chasing Grant Horvat," Chamblee stated. "It’s like he wants to outdo every YouTuber in the game instead of outplay everybody in the game of golf."
These remarks come as DeChambeau has missed the cut at all three major championships this year. He is aiming to avoid becoming the first golfer since 1998 to miss the cut in all four majors in a single calendar year. Tom Watson and Ben Crenshaw were the last golfers to achieve this unenviable feat.
DeChambeau, a two-time U.S. Open champion (2020 and 2024), has experienced success on the LIV Golf tour, which he joined in 2022. However, his performance in golf's premier events has faltered this season.
Faldo, a veteran commentator and multiple major champion, also questioned DeChambeau's approach, specifically his comment about wanting to "attack the links." Faldo countered, "Well, I’ve never attacked a links. You thread it, don’t you? You feed it down the fairway."
Speculation about the future of LIV Golf, with its financial backing uncertain, has also led to discussions about player career paths. DeChambeau himself has indicated a willingness to expand his YouTube channel and participate in tournaments that welcome him should his current league cease operations. Chamblee has a history of making pointed remarks about DeChambeau, having previously referred to him as a "circus barker" and a "captain’s nightmare" before the Ryder Cup last September.
