Gabby Williams named Finals MVP as Angel Reese and the Dream fall short in decisive matchup.
The Golden State Valkyries have secured their first WNBA championship, defeating the Atlanta Dream 68-63 in a hard-fought Game 7 of the WNBA Finals. Valkyries guard Gabby Williams was named Finals MVP after leading her team with 30 points in the series-clinching game.
Reese, a key player for the Dream, struggled offensively in the deciding game, scoring only one point in the fourth quarter. She finished Game 7 with eight points on 3-for-7 shooting from the field, along with 12 rebounds and four turnovers. This marked her fourth consecutive game with more turnovers than made field goals. Over these last four games, Reese shot 12-for-45 (26.7%) and committed 19 turnovers.
Williams proved to be the difference-maker for the Valkyries, with 28 of her 30 points coming in the second half. Her clutch three-pointer with 2:18 remaining broke a 57-57 tie and gave Golden State the lead for good. She also blocked four shots.
The Dream had held a 2-1 series lead earlier in the finals, with Reese performing strongly in Games 2 and 3, contributing a combined 51 points and 28 rebounds. However, the Valkyries rallied to win the next two games, forcing a Game 7. The Dream managed to force the decisive game with an 80-69 victory in Game 6, though Reese shot 5-for-18 in that contest.
In Game 7, the Dream started slow, falling behind 8-0 before Reese scored Atlanta's first basket. Jordin Canada led the Dream with 18 points, and Allisha Gray added 16. Rhyne Howard struggled offensively, scoring six points on 3-for-14 shooting.
The Valkyries' victory marks a historic moment for the franchise, securing their inaugural championship. The team demonstrated resilience throughout the series, overcoming deficits and key challenges to emerge as champions. Kiah Stokes contributed eight points and 13 rebounds, while Veronica Burton added 10 points and 11 rebounds for the winning side.
