The New York Giants are reportedly benching veteran quarterback Jameis Winston in favor of rookie J.J. McCarthy for Sunday's game against the Houston Texans.

McCarthy, acquired by the Giants in a trade with the Minnesota Vikings less than a month ago, will make his first start for the team as they aim for the playoffs in a competitive NFC East.

McCarthy saw significant action in the fourth quarter of the Giants' recent 34-27 loss to the New Orleans Saints. Entering the game with the team trailing 34-10, McCarthy led a spirited comeback attempt. Despite an interception on his first possession, he completed 11 of 21 passes for 243 yards and one touchdown. He orchestrated three scoring drives, including one that resulted in a touchdown pass to Isaiah Likely and another that set up a field goal, narrowing the deficit to 34-27.

The No. 10 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft's impressive late-game performance marked a career-high for fourth-quarter passing yards this season. It also positioned him second for most passing yards by a non-starting quarterback in the final quarter over the last 25 seasons, according to ESPN.

While the comeback ultimately fell short, McCarthy's play has earned him the starting role. Winston, who helped the Giants to a 2-1-1 record prior to this decision, struggled against the Saints, throwing two interceptions.

The Giants' running game has also faltered with Winston at quarterback, and the team hopes McCarthy's mobility can provide a spark. McCarthy was the team's leading rusher with 26 yards in Sunday's loss.

Despite the bye week following the Texans game, the Giants opted not to wait for an easier debut for McCarthy. The team currently leads the NFC East at 3-2-1, with division rivals facing their own struggles, presenting an opportunity for New York to secure a playoff spot.
