The New York Giants' starting offense failed to score in a critical late-game simulation during training camp practice at The Greenbrier resort on July 31, 2026. Tasked with driving for a field goal or touchdown from their own 39-yard line with 44 seconds remaining, the unit was unable to move the ball effectively against the defense.
On the opening play of the situational drill, quarterback Jaxson Dart was called for a "sack" by Brian Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux. The offense managed an 8-yard gain on second down under pressure from Burns, but the drive stalled. A penalty on the offense on third down appeared to contribute to the clock expiring before a conversion could be attempted.
Head Coach John Harbaugh described the confusion of the moment, stating, "It’s like after a game, you know what I mean? It’s hard to tell what happened. It was going fast."
In contrast, both the second-team offense led by Jameis Winston and the third-team offense with Brandon Allen at quarterback were successful in their attempts. Both units managed to get into field goal range, with kicker Ben Sauls converting attempts to force overtime in both instances.
Harbaugh, wanting the starting unit to have another chance to make amends, sent them back out. This time, Dart completed a 27-yard pass to Calvin Austin III on the first play and spiked the ball to stop the clock. However, Dart's subsequent pass on third down, intended for the middle of the field, was intercepted by defensive tackle Darius Alexander. This interception ended the practice drill.
Regarding the interception, Harbaugh acknowledged Dart was trying to gain yards but likely should have made a different decision given they were in field goal range. "Maybe he didn’t see the defensive lineman," Harbaugh said. "There’s a lot of nuances to that course. Obviously, it’s not a circumstance you want to throw an interception."
Harbaugh also noted the nature of training camp, where he wants quarterbacks to push the envelope and compete, even if it leads to mistakes. "You put the quarterback in a tough spot out here," he commented. "Do you want him pushing the envelope? Or are you going to criticize him for throwing a pick in training camp? I mean, it’s training camp. We’re working through all these things, and you do want him pushing the envelope. You want him competing out there."
