The San Francisco Giants have placed third baseman Matt Chapman on the 10-day injured list due to an abdominal strain. The team also called up utility infielder Christian Koss from Triple-A to bolster the infield.
Chapman's absence, which begins Wednesday, means the Giants will be without both halves of their left side of the infield, as shortstop Willy Adames is currently sidelined for the third consecutive game with back spasms. Koss was immediately inserted into the starting lineup at shortstop, while Casey Schmitt, who had been filling in at short, shifted to third base, his natural position.
Before Chapman's injury, the Giants faced an infield shortage. On Tuesday, outfielder Jonah Cox was forced to play second base, a position he had not played since college, with Luis Arraez moving to third. Chapman himself attempted to continue playing after experiencing pain in his seventh-inning at-bat but was replaced on defense in the bottom half of the inning.
Chapman indicated that he had been experiencing intermittent discomfort around his hip flexor and lower midsection since early May. The pain intensified after he made a barehanded play to end the sixth inning.
Adding to the timing, Chapman was already anticipating a potential absence. His wife is expecting their first child this weekend, and he was scheduled to miss three games around that time regardless of injury. The Giants hope Adames will be ready to return by Friday for the start of a series against the Colorado Rockies.
