The New York Giants are actively looking to make significant additions before the NFL trade deadline, with head coach John Harbaugh emphasizing the team's openness to "any and all" trade calls. The Giants are targeting impact players to improve their chances of winning the NFC East.
Harbaugh confirmed that he is willing to engage with owners, general managers, and other coaches directly, deviating from the typical GM-to-GM communication. "I'll put it out there: We're open for any calls," Harbaugh said upon the team's return from their bye week. He also mentioned leaving an unreturned voicemail for Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk regarding the availability of defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons before he was traded to the Bears. "We're not part of any secret society oath that says you can only talk to somebody," Harbaugh stated. "We're not in that agreement. So, anybody can call us. We won't be adhering to that particular agreement."
The Giants have been linked to running back Jonathan Taylor, and with quarterback Lamar Jackson's season-ending injury, Derrick Henry has also emerged as a potential target. Harbaugh expressed a desire for an "elite workhorse rusher," similar to what he previously described as a "Derrick Henry or Saquon Barkley circumstance."
Harbaugh also addressed potential trade discussions with the Baltimore Ravens, acknowledging a past relationship with owner Steve Bisciotti. He believes that such connections can sometimes facilitate easier communication. "People on every level make calls to people on every level because they know them," he said. "We're turning over every stone. We're making every call. We're getting all the information we can possibly get at all times, and we are not apologizing for that at any point in time ever."
Beyond running backs, the Giants are also in the market for defensive tackles, edge rushers, and receivers. Harbaugh stressed the importance of acquiring players who not only fill a need but also fit the team's financial and locker room profiles. The Giants possess first-, second-, and third-round picks in the 2027 draft, along with two sixth-round selections, and are mindful of not depleting their draft capital.
"It's hard to find players that can make you better because we have good players — very good players," Harbaugh explained. "So, it's got to be something that is a need, that fits your financial profile, that fits your price tag. We have to be smart shoppers that way."
Harbaugh also noted the importance of character assessments when considering potential trades. "We have got a great camaraderie, a great brotherhood, synergy," he said. "You want to take that into account, even to the point where you probably talk to some of your [leaders] before you did something like that. Make sure that everybody understands, and they're kind of on board with it."
