Giants' Cam Skattebo Vows to Play 'For Free' After Controversial Penalty
Running back criticizes the NFL for flagging his hard-hitting style after a crucial play in the Giants' overtime victory.
New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo expressed frustration with the NFL's officiating after drawing an unnecessary roughness penalty during the team's overtime win against the Houston Texans. Skattebo, who made a pivotal 42-yard run in overtime to set up the game-winning touchdown, was flagged for his hit on safety M.J. Stewart.
"The NFL loves to post me when I do stuff like that, but then also wants to take stuff from me," Skattebo said after the game. "So, I mean, I’m going to run the ball like I want to run the ball, and if I’m going to continue to get flagged or it or fined for it, man, I guess I’m going to play for free."
Skattebo's hard-hitting style has been a hallmark of his early career, with the league often highlighting his aggressive runs. However, the NFL has also been working to reduce helmet-to-helmet contact. Officials apparently deemed Skattebo led with the crown of his helmet on the play against Stewart. Despite the penalty, Skattebo vowed to continue playing with the same intensity.
"I’m going to do what I can to be on this team, to give everything I got. If they’re going to punish me for that, I’m just going to keep doing it and keep playing hard," he stated.
Fans and Skattebo alike questioned the call, with many on social media labeling it "soft" and "bizarre." The play occurred in overtime, where Skattebo's run helped set up Devin Singletary's 30-yard touchdown to secure the 27-24 victory for the Giants. Skattebo finished the game with 124 rushing yards on 17 carries and a touchdown, potentially re-establishing himself as the team's lead back after a game the previous week where he received no carries.
Earlier in the season, Skattebo fumbled in overtime against the Washington Commanders, a game that ended in a tie. Head coach John Harbaugh had downplayed the lack of carries in that game, stating it was not intentional and that the team was not planning to be down by 24 points.
The Giants now head into a bye week before facing the Philadelphia Eagles. Skattebo indicated that his playing style is unlikely to change despite the recent penalty and the league's focus on player safety.
