Luis Arraez was absent from the San Francisco Giants' lineup for the second game of their series against the A's on Wednesday, one day after fouling a ball off his foot. Manager Tony Vitello described the situation with his second baseman as a "tardy on the next pedicure."
Arraez left Tuesday night's 3-1 victory when the discomfort from the foul ball became too significant. X-rays on his right foot, which was struck by a pitch from A's starter Aaron Civale in the first inning, came back negative. The ball narrowly missed the protective padding on his shin.
Although Arraez initially remained in the game, he was removed before the top of the fifth inning. Casey Schmitt, a utility player, shifted from left field to second base to replace him. Schmitt also filled in for Arraez on Wednesday, with Victor Bericoto starting in left field.
Vitello did not rule out the possibility of Arraez serving as a pinch-hitter on Wednesday and expressed optimism that he could return to the starting lineup on Thursday. When Vitello checked on Arraez, the player reported his foot was numb, which the manager believed could help with swelling.
"I’ve gotta believe that’s going to help swelling and all that," Vitello said. "I don’t know that it makes the most sense or that it will even be an option on the sheet [for Arraez to pinch-hit]. But hopefully with the work he’s doing back there it would mean tomorrow would be an opportunity. We’ll see."
Arraez was seen in the clubhouse during media availability with his right foot wrapped in athletic tape. He appeared to be in good spirits.
