Two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Giannis Antetokounmpo has been traded to the Miami Heat from the Milwaukee Bucks. The deal involves multiple players moving between the two franchises.
Antetokounmpo, along with Bobby Portis, will head to Miami. In return, the Milwaukee Bucks will receive Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., and Kasparas Jakucionis. Antetokounmpo was originally drafted by the Bucks in 2013 and helped the team win an NBA championship in 2021. The 31-year-old forward has previously expressed dissatisfaction with the team's management, particularly regarding his availability to play after a knee injury last season.
Reports had also linked the Boston Celtics to Antetokounmpo, but he will now join the Heat. Miami Heat president Pat Riley described the acquisition as "one of the great trades" in the franchise's history. The Heat have won three NBA titles in 2006, 2012, and 2013.
In April, following the Bucks' failure to reach the playoffs, Antetokounmpo commented on communication issues, stating, "I feel like sometimes people just don't listen. They listen to the sources. The main source is me. It is what it is."
In separate news, the Philadelphia 76ers have confirmed the acquisition of Jaylen Brown from the Boston Celtics and signed free-agent guard Anfernee Simons. The 76ers reportedly traded veteran forward Paul George, two first-round picks, and two second-round picks for Brown.
