New York Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole is demonstrating improved performance as he continues his recovery from Tommy John surgery, showing signs of regaining his pre-injury effectiveness.

After a difficult June, during which he posted a 6.12 earned run average, Cole experienced a turnaround in July. He recorded a 2.97 ERA with 39 strikeouts and only four walks across 30 1/3 innings for the month. Cole recorded at least seven strikeouts in four of his five starts in July, including an 11-strikeout performance against the Pittsburgh Pirates on July 22.

He concluded the month by pitching six scoreless innings against the Chicago White Sox, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out seven batters. IMAGE2:

The Yankees have gradually increased Cole's workload since his return. Initially limited to 72 pitches in his season debut, his pitch counts have steadily risen. In his most recent outing, Cole threw 99 pitches, and he has thrown at least 93 pitches in four consecutive starts. This increased workload provides him with a greater opportunity to achieve higher strikeout totals.

Cole is slated to face the Chicago Cubs, an offense that ranks second in the majors in runs per game and third in weighted runs created plus (wRC+). However, the Cubs' strikeout rate is around the league average, suggesting a potentially favorable matchup for Cole.

Across his last four starts, Cole has accumulated 33 strikeouts, averaging more than eight per appearance. While facing a potent offense at Wrigley Field presents challenges, Cole's pitching appears to be approaching its previous form, with his strikeout capabilities showing renewed strength. IMAGE5:
